The Imam Shadhili  said about the Hizb ul Bahr;
By God, I did not utter it [the Litany of the Sea] except as it came from the Prophet of God(s), from whose instruction I learned it. "Guard it;' he said to me, "for it contains the Ism al-'Adhim-Greatest name of God:"-  It is not recited in any place without security reigning there. If it had been with the inhabitants of Baghdad, the Tatars would not have taken the city.  On his death bed Imam Shadhili gave Naseeha-counsel to recite his Litany of the Sea (Hizb ul Bahr) often, and he said, “Teach it to your children for  the Ism al-'Adhim-Greatest name of God is in it.”

The worthy Shaykh Abu al-'Aza'im Madi ibn Sultan related to me in the city ofTunis, may God the Exalted watch over it, as did also the worthy and blessed Shaykh Sharaf al-Din, son of the Shaykh (al-Shadhili) in the city of Damanhur al-Wahsh of Egypt in the year A.H. 715 that shaykh was on the point of setting out from Cairo to perform the pilgrimage to Mecca a short time after the departure of the pilgrims.

He said, ''I have been divinely ordered to go on pilgrimage this year. So find for us a Nile vessel in which to make the journey by way of Upper Egypt:' They looked about for a vessel, but found only one belonging to Christians on which was an elderly Christian man with his sons.

He said, "Let us get on board:' We entered the vessel and set sail from Cairo and traveled for two or three days. Then the wind shifted so that we were sailing into it. So we tied up to the bank of the Nile at an uninhabited spot. We remained there about a week within sight of the hills of Cairo.

One of the pilgrims accompanying us asked, "How is it that the Shaykh says that he was ordered to perform the pilgrimage this year when the time for it has passed? And how long will this journey take? , In the middle of the day the shaykh slept and awoke, and then offered this prayer [known as Litany of the Sea]. "Where is the captain of the vessel?" he inquired.

"Yes" he answered, "here I am:'
"What is your name?" the shaykh asked. "Mismar:'
"O blessed Mismar, unfurl the sail:' the shaykh ordered.
"O my master:' the captain objected, "[lf I do that], we shall come again to Cairo by sailing before the wind:'

"We shall again become travelers:' the shaykh replied, "if God wills:'
Again the captain objected, "This wind will drive us back to Cairo before the end of this day, and, furthermore, with the wind as it is, to get the ship under sail will be absolutely impossible:'

"Unfurl the sail;' the shaykh ordered him, "with the blessing of God:' So we unfurled the sail, and God [He is exalted] commanded the wind so that it shifted and filled the sail [so quickly that they] were unable to cast off the rope from the stake. They cut it and we departed under a gentle breeze. The captain converted to Islam, both he and his brother.

Their father did not cease to lament and say, "I have lost my two sons on,
this journey:' "On the contrary;' the shaykh said to him, "you have gained them:'

That night the Christian had a vision in which the day of resurrection, as it were, had come, and he was beholding the Garden and the fire. He witnessed the shaykh (al-Shadhili) conducting to the Garden a large crowd of people. Among them were the Christian's sons. He wanted to follow them, but he was prevented. He was told, "You are not of them until you enter their religion:'

The Christian related that to the shaykh, and he [the Christian] converted to Islam. Then the shaykh told him, "The people whom you saw with me are my companions to the day of resurrection."

We continued our journey easily and successfully with incidents the telling of which would consume a long time. They finished the pilgrimage that year.

My master, Madi, related, according to a report from the shaykh, The Christian became one of the great saints of God. Consequently, he sold his vessel and performed the pilgrimage with us, along with his sons. He had a zawiya (worship place) in Upper Egypt and was one of those who were endowed with charismatic powers. This blessed journey was an occasion for the manifestation of such a power. May God have mercy on him and be pleased with him.
The shaykh said,

By God, I did not utter it [the Litany of the Sea] except as it came from the Prophet of God, from whose instruction I learned it. "Guard it;' he said to me, "for it contains the greatest name of God:'

It is not recited in any place without security reigning there. If it had been with the inhabitants of Baghdad, the Tatars would not have taken the city.

Hizb ul Bahr - Litany of the Sea in English

In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. Blessings of God and peace be upon our master Muhammad and his family. O God,
O Exalted One, O Gentle One,
O AII-Knowing One,
Thou art my Lord, and Thy knowledge is sufficient for me. What an excellent Iord is my Lord! What a wonderful sufficiency is my sufficiency!
Thou plea to Thee is for protection, in movements and moments of rest, in words, desires, and passing thoughts, from doubts, suppositions and fancies-veilings, they, over hearts, occluding sight of the unseen.
The faithful were tried; They were severely shaken.
Then the hypocrites would say, with those of disease-ridden hearts, "God and His Messenger promised us only delusion. (Q. 33:11-12)
Even so, make us firm, aid US, and subject to us this sea, as Thou did subject the sea to Moses, and the fire to Ibrahim, and the mountains and iron to David, and the wind, the Satans, and the jinn to Solomon.

Put in subjection to us every sea of thine in earth and heaven, in this domain and the celestial, the sea of this world and the sea of the next. Render subservient to us everything, "O Thou, whose hand holds sovereignty over everything" (Q. 23:88).

Kaf ha' ya' 'ayn sad
Kaf ha' ya' 'ayn sad
Kaf ha' ya' 'ayn sad

Help us, for Thou art the best of helpers.
Open to us the hand of mercy, for Thou art the best of openers. Pardon us, for Thou art the best of pardoners.
Be compassionate toward us, for Thou art the best of those who show compassion.
Sustain us, for Thou art the best of sustainers. Guide us and rescue us from the unjust people.

Send us a gentle breeze, as Thou dost know how to do, and let it blow on us from the storehouses of Thy mercy. Let it bear us along as it by miraculous intervention, with security and well-being, in religion, worldly affairs, and the hereafter.

Thou art powerful over all things. God, facilitate for us our affairs, with ease of mind and body, with security and well-being in religious and worldly matters. Be a companion for us on our journey, and a substitute for our households.

Blot out the countenances of our enemies, and transform them where they stand, disabling them from leaving or coming to US. If We willed, We would blot out their eyes. Yet, they would race forward to the path. But how would they see? If We willed, We should transform them where they stand. Thus, they would be unable to leave or return (Q 36:66-67).

Ya' sin! By the Wise Qur' an! Surely thou art one of those sent on a straight path! A revelation sent down by the Mighty, the Merciful, that thou mightest warn a people whose fathers had not been warned. Yet, they do not take heed.

The declaration has been confirmed against the greater part of them. Yet they do not believe. We have circled their necks with chains up to the chin, but they hold their heads high. Before them have We placed a barrier, and behind them a barrier, and We have obscured their vision; so they see not (Q 36:1-8).

May their faces be deformed!
May their faces be deformed!
May their faces be deformed!

Let their faces be submissive before the Living, the Self-Subsistent, For he who is laden with wrong has already met frustration. Ta' sin, ha' mim, 'ayn sin qaf. (Q 27:1)
He has released the two seas that meet; Yet between them is a barrier [barzakh] that they do not overpass. ...(Q 55:19-20)

Ha' mim, ha' mim, ha' mim, ha' mim, ha' mim, ha' mim, ha' mim! (Q 40:1)

The affair has been decreed. The triumph has come. Over us they shall not triumph. Ha' mim!

[It is] the sending down of the Scripture from God, The Mighty, the AII-Knowing, Forgiver of sin,
Receiver of penitence, Severe in punishing, Forbearing.
No god is there except Him.
To Him is the returning. (Q 40:1-3)
In the name of God (bismillah) is our door. May [God] bless our walls.
Ya' sin (Q 36:1) is our ceiling.
Kaf ha' ya' 'ayn sad (Q 19:1) is our sufficiency. Ha' mim 'ayn sin qaf (Q 42:1) is our shelter.
So God is sufficient for thee against them, for He hears all, knows all.
[Repeat this thrice]

The veil of the throne has been dropped over us, and the eye of God is gazing at us. God is behind them, round about. Indeed, it is a glorious recital [Qur'an], inscribed on a guarded tablet [lawh mahfuz] (Q. 85:20-21). [Repeat this thrice]

My Protector is God, Who revealed the Book (from time to time), and He will choose and befriend the righteous. (Q. 7:196) [Repeat this thrice]
M y sufficiency is God. No god is there except Him. In Him have I put my trust, For He is Lord of the majestic throne (Q. 9:129). [Repeat this thrice]

In the name of God, with whose Name nothing in the earth or sky can do harm, for He is the All-Hearer, All-Knower. [Repeat this thrice]
There is no force and no power except with God, the High, the Mighty.
The book can be bought from either and UK and US here is one link to the book

The Secret powers of Hizb ul Bahr - 6 points

 Bismillahi Babuna

It’s said The first line of the Hizbul Bahr will be bring 1,000 army of Angels to your right side and a 1,000 army of Jinns to your left side.

It is related from Shaykh abul Hasan al-Shadhili;

Point  1. That the Hizb al Bahr contains the Greatest Name of Allah ( 'Ism 'Azim) and that it was never recited in any place except that there was security there.

Point  2.  It is related from Ibn 'Ayyasd that;

 "whoever recites it every day at Sunrise, Allah hears his prayer, relives his distress, raises his standing among people, expands his breast with Knowledge of the divine Oneness, facilitates his concerns, lifts his hardship, keeps from him the evil of man and Jinn and protects him from harm and mishaps of the night and day".

Point  3. He also said;

"whoever recites it after every prayer, Allah enriches him from needying any of His creatures, protects him from the events ofhis time and facilitates from him the means of eternal happiness in his every movement and rest".

Point  4. Shaykh Ahmed Zarruq says;

"As for the bringing about effects with this invocation, it is commensurate with ones's aim and aspiration that one has command of it to draw or repel, intending what is desired when one says 'And subject to us the this sea"

Point  5. My Master Ibn 'Ata'illah says;

It is a daily Wird-litany after the Mid-afternoon prayer (salah al 'Asr); thus did Shaykh Abul 'Abbas Al-Mursi arrange it.

Point 6. Shaykh abul Hasan al-Shadili says;

'whoever reads our Hizb is with us (this is general Ijaza)'Kitab Mafakhir Aliyah Fiy Maathir Shadhiliyah

Some notes on the Points:

Secret Protection

(..We ask Your protection, in movements and rests, in words and desires and thoughts; from doubts and imaginings, and the illusions that veil hearts from beholding things unseen..- Hizb ul Bahr)

Secret of Riqz
(Give us sustenance, for You are the best of providers. Hizb ul Bahr )

See Point .3 above
Point .4 Shaykh Ahmed Zarruq says;

"As for the bringing about effects with this invocation, it is commensurate-(degree)with one’s aim and aspiration that one has command of it to draw or repel, intending what is desired when one says 'And subject to us the this sea"

my notes (it is commensurate-(degree)  think about this point deeply, if you want a answered dua-

Point .4 is about the effectiveness and the result of reading the Hizbul Bahr, meaning the Amount or Degree of one’s Niyyah-intention and Himmah-yearning put into the reading, this is also the amount Sidq-sincerity or Earnest put into it. Earnest -means Seriousness, fixed determination, importance, eagerness; intentness. So one needs to read it with Earnestness to receive its secrets and this is true with any Dua or Wird or Award, it’s not just the words on the tongue its whose Heart is saying there words and what is the degree of Need of Help from Allah they are hoping for and is it being done with Sidq-sincerity, and one needs to put or pay attention-tawajjuh in their heart and turn their heart towards Allah through the grace of their Shaykh at the point when one reads 'wa sakh-khir lana ha-dhal bahr' meaning and 'subject to us this sea'.

Reading Hizb ul Bahr with hand movements and blowing some commentary

In Total there are 8 hand movements and blowing.

when reading the words 'Shahatil wujuhi'-' May the faces be disfigured'. You hit or slap your left hand on the floor.

It says in the sirah that these were the words used by the Holy Prophet (saw) when his house was seiged and he wanted to exit his house and said these words and made hand movements to the enemy, they all fell asleep and Sayyiduna Ali came into the house and slept in the bed of the Holy Prophet (saw).

Reciting 'Ha Mim' 7 times.
This is done blowing Ha Mim to your Left, Right blowing Ha Mim back, front, blowing Ha Mim up, down and 7th blowing Ha Mim across your chest. These are the 6 ways the devil and jinns can attack you or enter you and the 7th is your Sadr-Chest referring to ones heart.

The reading Hizbul Bahr with hand movements and blowing is what i was taught by my old Sufi master many years ago. The Hizbul  Bahr as one can read from the points mentioned above is thus a multi application Wird of Protection,( it can even help Barren women) that can Help for Deen or Dunya problems as it contains even the 'Ism al-Azim-Allahs Greatest Hidden Name by which no dua is turned away.  More to be  added inshallah

7 Ha-Meem meaning By Shaykh Muhammad Ya'qoubi

There are few ways of reading the Hizb ul Bahr
and using some of the lines as Ruqyah - Spiritual Healing

Ruqyah in Islam is the recitation of Qur'anic ayat, hadith text, Allahs names, Islamic Formulaic dua; for  refuge in  seeking help or  treating sicknesses and other problems  such as afflictions, personal problems, Sihr-(Magic) Masaha-(Possession) and 'Ayn-(Evil Eye) and remedies for major problems.

1. In a group

2. by yourself

3. by yourself for the intention of wanting a result - (this is done with hand movements and blowing)

4. Reading specific lines as Ruqyah-Spiritual Healing or Amal-Action
Reading the specific lines for protective Ruqyah-Spiritual Healing or Amal-Action, a amal is to have specific need fulfilled such as job or problems to go away issues with family members such as horrible in-laws or a bad husband or wife. Or any other personal issue. There many lines, for Rizq, Love, enemies, Sihr, Safety, Barren Women and much more.

Just to mention;
Give us sustenance, for You are the best of providers.- Hizb ul Bahr
War zuqna fa-innaka khayr-ruraa ziqeen
this line is to increase ones Rizq and read several hundred times
Another sound bit is 'Bismillahi Babuna' see below.

'Bismillahi Babuna' from Hizb ul Bahr

For those who know me, you'll know I use 'Bismillahi Babuna' before i type up links or articles why you may want to know? Bismillahi Babuna - means 'The name of Allah is our Door' it’s a sound bit from Hizb ul Bahr. Once you read my article below about the extremely powerful meaning of Bismillah you'll get a taste why i use it so much.!

....Bismillahi babuna. Tabaraka hitanuna Ya-Seen saqfuna- from Hizb ul Bahr
In the name of God is our Door, May God bless our Walls, Ya-sin is our Ceiling.

The key words, Door, Walls, Ceiling; this is what makes ones house, there is the Inner house the heart and the Outer the house you live in, (also the 'Dar al Islam' is the House of Surrender)

Just like 5 pillars of Islam are called -'Arkan ul Islam'. But what are pillars if there is no walls, or roof. Now if one has a Door it means there must be a foundation, pillars, walls and a roof/Ceiling. Otherwise a Door cannot stand!

'Tabaraka' hitanuna' is found 'Chapter 67 of the Quran' is our walls.
'Ya Seen saqfuna' is found in 'Chapter 36 of the Quran' is our roof.

As for one of its Sufic application and usage:
One of the Sufic powers of just 'Bismillahi Babuna'-is the 'Barakah of the Door' meaning blessings for ones house. If 'Bismillahi Babuna' is written on a stone or a metal or a paper and pasted on the door of the house, will create barakah for the house and keep the evils off the house.

The power is on the Word Bimillah and its secrets please see my article;
......Bismillah is healing from every illness and protection against every disease. Ar-Rahman is a help for everyone who believes in Him. It is a name not used for anyone else. Ar-Rahim is for those who repent, believe and perform righteous actions.

Whoever wants Allah to rescue him from the nineteen Zabaniyya [tormenting angels within the Fire of Hell], should recite, 'In the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, Most Merciful' so that Allah will make each letter a shield for him against one of them. The basmala contains nineteen letters according to the number of the angels of the Fire who Allah says are also nineteen. See (74:30)

Allah has caused this ayat to be effective as a cure for every sickness, an aid to every kind of healing treatment, a relief from every form of poverty, a shield against the Fire of Hell, and a guarantee of security from degradation, misrepresentation and slanderous accusation, as long as they [His believing servants] keep up the practice of reciting it.

Your 'awra' Nakedness is hidden from Jinns when you say bismillah when you undress or go to the toilet, otherwise they see you nakedness.

A reference about the Muslim Ummah, 'On the Day of Resurrection, the members of my Community will be saying: "In the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the All-Compassionate [Bismillah-hir-rahman-nir-raheem," and so, when their deeds are placed in the balance, their good deeds will outweigh [their bad deeds]'.

see- Bismillah -19 letters - also called [ayatul-aman]. verse of Scripture that Guarantees Protection

  2. "Q: Salaam, do we need permission to recite this?"

    Walikum salam

    yes one needs permission-'ijaza to recite the Hizbul Bahr.

    So to be connected to Imam Shadhili also here are Jinn to issues that some will have issues.

    That said there is a General 'Ijaza given by Imam Shadhili to teach it to ones children this is a 'ijaza of barakah.

    There are a few types a full ijaza to recite from a Sufi shaykh or someone with ijaza this also can be Barakah.

    And a full 'ijaza of Sirr-secrets to access its spiritual power also given by people of ijaza too.

    if you would like to recite for blessing then this given from Imam Shadhili. What one does it offer an sheep as Sadaqah in this name for his honour.

    also one should also read Surah Fatiha and send it to his noble soul and ask him to open the Secrets of the Hizbul Bahr before reciting and after and to send all iits rewards-Thawab again to his Ruh-Soul and again request for his blessings for the Hizbul Bahr to be accessed which is Good Adaab which many or most dont do as they dont know the Adaab to access a Wird of a Sufi Master.

    which i'm now sharing with you
